Your voice will help us promote and protect the civil and human rights of all people with intellectual or developmental disabilities.

#bFair2DirectCare

What is #bFair2DirectCare?  #bFair2DirectCare is the voice of 128,000 New Yorkers with developmental disabilities, who often cannot speak for themselves. #bFair2DirectCare is also the call to action to remind state leaders that direct care not-for-profit agency workers are agents of the state who need a fair rate of pay which is commensurate with their vital support responsibilities.

It has been 8 years since developmental disability organizations have been given a real raise, and we are now facing wage mandates and new labor rules without having the adequate funding to sustain them.

It’s time for New York State to step up and provide funds that protect direct care workers and the people they care for!

The #bFair2DirectCare campaign, consisting of statewide and local associations that represent non-profit providers, direct care workers, and self-advocates and their families, is asking Albany to invest $45 million a year for the next six years to fund a living wage for direct care workers, who are mostly women and people of color. The sum equals 0.029 percent of the $156 billion state budget.

If the funding is not provided, many non-profit providers may be forced to close their doors, pushing the people in their care back into the state system – costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars more. A majority of the majorities in the Legislature support the funding request.

Contact your New York State Legislators by phone and in writing.  Tell them your story, why #bFair2DirectCare is important and ask them to speak up about the desperate need for funding.
